Abstract

The fishing industry in Malaysia has grown rapidly. This rapid progress can be measured in terms of the increasing number of boats, fishing tools and increased fish landings in Malaysia. This enjoyed achievement is the result of the modernization process undertaken by the government of Malaysia under the auspices of the Malaysia Department of Fisheries. The government has been encouraging fishermen to use modern fishing equipments through the use of constricted seine trawling boats and trawling boats to allow them to catch fish a bit further from the shore. The development of the fishing industry in Malaysia was also because of the increased territorial waters of Malaysia from 47,000 to 162,000 square nautical miles after the declaration of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) on April 25, 1980. Lately, the fishing industry in Malaysia is facing a very worrisome phenomenon, the difficulty of getting local fishing labours in exploring deep-sea fishing. The government, including local owners are starting to feel the anxiety. Because of this problem, this article will discuss the involvement of Thai fish labours in the deep-sea fishing industry in Kelantan in detail. Other matters to be discussed include the processing of the Thai fish labourers’ entry in Kelantan, factors that have caused their arrival, tasks of the Thai fish labourers on the boat and the Share Division System.
