Demi Masa, Kerugian Terpelantingnya Selama Ini: Sorotan Buku Smolin, “Time Reborn. From The Crisis in Physics to the Future of the Universe”

Abstract

Satu daripada masalah besar yang dihadapi dalam fizik ialah penyatuan Teori Kenisbian dengan Teori Kuantum. Berbagai-bagai usaha dilakukan sejak zaman Einstein hinggalah sekarang masih juga tidak berjaya. Dua pendekatan mutakhir ini dibangunkan masing-masingnya dikenali sebagai Teori Graviti Kuantum yang mengekalkan andaian bahawa jirim ini terdiri daripada atom dan ratusan subatom, manakala satu lagi ialah menerusi perubahahan paradigm daripada atomisme kepada tetalisme, iaitu atom digantikan dengan tetali. Smolin seorang atomis percaya bahawa kegagalan penyatuan dua teori besar fizik itu bukanlah disebabkan oleh atomisme tetapi sama ada atomisme atau tetalisme kejayaan tidak mungkin tercapai jika paradigma tentang tabii masa tidak berubah sehingga kedua-dua teori besar itu sebenarnya masih mewarisi kedudukan masa dalam fizik Newton. Buku Smolin 2014, “Time Reborn. From the Crisis in Physics to the Future of the Universe” membicarakan tabii masa dalam fizik Newton dan bagaimana teori ini diwarisi dalam Teori Kenisbian dan Teori Kuantum yang menjadi penghalang penyatuannya. Buku ini membicarakan saranan tabii masa yang baharunya yang menjanjikan kejayaan. Bicara isu ini disorot bab demi bab. Setiap bab ditonjolkan keaslian dan kenovelan karya ini tetapi juga ditimbulkan juga mana-mana kelemahan yang ada. Kesimpulannya, buku ini banyak perkara yang baharu dan menarik tentang masa. Walaupun ada beberapa kelemahan pandangannya yang dikaitkan dengan implikasi daripada tabii masa beliau yang baharu ini, terutamanya dalam bab terakhir buku ini, namun buku ini cukup amat menginspirasikan.

One of the big problem in physics is the unification of the Relativity Theory and the Quantum Theory. Many attempts have been formulated since Einstein until today but it is still unsuccessful. Two latest approaches are developed known as the Quantum Gravity Theory (QGT) and the String Theory (ST) respectively. The QGT retains the assumption that matter consists of atoms and hundreds of its subatomic particles, whereas the ST assumes matter consists of strings.  Smolin is an atomist and believes that the failure of the unification programme is due to the improper assumptions of the nature of time as such that the two theories are still inherits the role of time in the Newton’s physics. Smolin Book 2014 “Time Reborn. From the Crisis in Physics to the Future of the Universe” deals with this inheritance which he believes become a hindrance o the unification and he suggests a new nature of time which promises a success. The book is reviewed chapter by chapter. Each chapter is highlighted its originality and novelty but at the same time any part which is thought to constitute its weakness or inappropriateness is also pointed out and discussed. In conclusion, the book contains many new and interesting materials on the nature of time. Even though it contains a few weaknesses on the discussion on the implications of the proposed new nature of time, especially in the final chapter, the book is sufficiently very inspirational.
